“Middle Lane Driver” – Sam Rush Workshop Poem!

If the freeway is life,
I’m a middle lane driver,
And I’ll get to where I need to go

There are cars to my left
Windows down, music-blaring
Some people drive fast
Because they don’t know
How much time they have left on the road
With every mile, another year
They’re having a blast,
And I let them pass me
I make brief trips to the fast lane
I rarely ever stay

I’m a middle lane driver,
And I’ll get to where I need to go

There are cars to my right
White-knuckled
Awaiting the next exit,
To get back home
Whatever it takes,
To get back home
And sometimes,
Deceleration is what I need
But I can’t live my entire life
To get back home
I rarely stay long

I’m a middle lane driver
And I’ll get to where I need to go

While I navigate traffic
For the rest of my life,
I need to remember that
I have a nice, nice car
It runs on the same stuff
That every other car runs on
But it guides me on my route
And not every car has a GPS
I hope to stay on the freeway
For as long as I can

I’m a middle lane driver,
And I’ll get to where I need to go
