With every bite I take of life thus far

With ev’ry step from near to distant fields,

Led by the multitude of glistening stars,

But one taste the earth abounding yields.

‘Tis known not just to me (For who am I

To know such truths beyond internal lies)

‘Tis known to all conceived who’ll also die.

This taste upon all tongues is no surprise.

For sugar does lie deep within the cane

That grows aplenty within the Tropics’ bounds.

While hands that cut the crops are under strain

For bitterness abounds in labor’s rounds.

What one finds bitter another does find sweet

But I, in bittersweet, rejoice replete.
